There are not enough words to fully explain what our Mother meant to us. Our Mama married our Daddy on April 13, 1945. It was a Friday the 13th, but it brought them much good luck, for they were married 59 years. They were inseparable. A part of mama died the day Daddy died. She was never truly happy again. We know he was there to welcome her home. I can hear him say, "Hi, Mama, come go with me!"
Mama bore 6 children, but mothered so many more. Sometimes it was a child that needed a bed and a meal for the night. Sometimes it was for longer. No child was ever turned away from her table or her heart. She always told us kids that she loved us all the same and that she had no favorites, but she made us think we were the favorite.
She was beautiful but never knew she was. She was modest, she was honest and she would have starved before she stole a dime. She was loyal and faithful. She would have fought anyone for us kids.
Her favorite color was purple. Whenever she saw something purple she would say, "Oh, ain't that purty!"
She was a mean crochet player. She loved to sing and she loved to dance with our Daddy. She had a beautiful singing voice. In her younger days it was country and bluegrass. Her later years were dedicated to the church, like the George Jones song, "When Mama Sang the Angels Listened."
What Mama meant to us was the smell of breakfast in the morning, her face at every game and performance regardless how big or small, her sneaking to put Santa Claus presents under the tree despite we were all grown, her holding all of her grandkids and telling them they were the purtiest baby ever and her combing Daddy's hair in the morning. That little house on the hill where Mama and Daddy lived and loved would not be a mansion in many people's eyes but it was a mansion in our hearts.
The only thing that makes this pain bearable is knowing she is singing in Heaven's choir and dancing on the streets of gold with our Daddy!
