Joanne Tuell

September 1, 1939 — April 30, 2019

Joanne Tuell the daughter of Joseph Michael and Anna (Peterson) Guy was born September 1, 1939 in Juneau, Alaska and departed this life on April 30, 2019 in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the age of 79 years, 7 months and 29 days.

Joanne was proud of her heritage, she was of the Tlingit tribe Kaagwaantaan Eagle clan of the Boxhouse of Sitka. She was a member of Sealaska and Goldbelt Corporation. She was the first Native American to win Miss Juneau and 1st runner-up to Miss Alaska. She went to Haskell College in Lawrence, KS. She worked at Peavine school for many years. Her wish was to make a difference in someone's life. She once said the reason why she loved working at Peavine was for the kids. She loved each and every one of them as her own and if a child needed anything even if it was a bandage for a bruised knee she said she did her job. Because while it was a small thing to most, to a child someone that cared meant everything. She was selfless. She enjoyed reading, hiking and fishing. She loved animals especially her cats and dogs. Her heart was in Alaska, she loved Alaska and the glacier and everything about it. Joanne touched many lives over the years and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

She was preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Anna Guy; her son Charles Tuell Jr.; her brothers Eugene Durkee and Jack Lee and her sister Mary Ann Durkee.

She is survived by a loving family which includes her husband Charles Tuell Sr.; her children Joseph Tuell and wife Ruby of Stilwell, Nancy Davidson and spouse James Dunn of Collinsville, and William Tuell and wife Leanna Stilwell; her sisters Delores Holloway and Yvonne Martin both of Juneau, AK; 16 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Several nieces, nephews, friends and other relatives also survive her.
