Joseph Fourkiller

March 20, 1925 — July 30, 2017

Joseph Fourkiller, was born March 20, 1925 and passed away early Sunday morning on July 30, 2017. He was born to Grant Fourkiller and Mary Hogner Fourkiller in Stilwell, OK. where he was raised.

After turning 18 years old March 20, 1943, Joe enlisted in the Navy on April 1st and remained in the Navy until January 1946 when he was honorably discharged. Joe served all of his time in the South Pacific Ocean in an aircraft carrier, the U.S.S Altamaha CVE 18. They operated with the 3rd Fleet and Task Group 38. They went to all of the islands where the fighting took place. The China Sea was their longest trip. Joe received a handful of awards while serving his country.

Joe worked for Boeing Aircraft Company in Wichita, KS for 6 years. Later on, he worked for Oklahoma Communications and TDS (Telephone Data System) for 34 years.

Joe was of the Baptist faith and was baptized in 1972. Joe enjoyed Cherokee hymns and scriptures as well as telling stories about his life. He loved hunting and fishing and being outdoors. He was handy with tools and proved himself as a true craftsman with the knives he created.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two wives, Louella (Christie) Fourkiller and Betty (Stevens) Fourkiller, five sisters, Margaret Fourkiller, Anna Ketcher, Janie Fourkiller, Betty Hummingbird, Georgia Glass, and one daughter, Margaret Fourkiller.

He leaves behind a loving family which includes, his children, Joseph and Marcy Fourkiller, of Tahlequah, OK, Henry Fourkiller, of Cyril, OK, Marty and Lea Fourkiller, of Albion, OK, Sam and Stephanie Hale, of Mangum, OK and sister, Lucille Wilson, of Stilwell, 14 grandchildren, Brandon Fourkiller, Bryan Fourkiller, Caleb Fourkiller, Casey Fourkiller, Jake Fourkiller, Cal Luquette, Sam Hale, Kristy Sheets, Kelee Wright, Kaela Azbill, LeAnne Hall, Rachel Chapman, Neda Meyers and Raelee Fourkiller and 27 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 2, 2017 at Fairfield Baptist Church with Bro. Marty Jones, Bro. Chuck Glass and Bro. Donnie Sanders officiating. Interment will follow at Fairfield Cemetery under the care and direction of Hart Funeral Home of Stilwell.
