Raymond Francis Hummingbird was born December 27, 1922 in Stilwell, Oklahoma to Gus and Iva (Coombes) Hummingbird. He departed this life on December 28, 2015 in Stilwell, Oklahoma at the age of 93 years and 1 day.
Raymond grew up in the Peavine Community, attending Peavine School and Stilwell High School, graduating in 1941. In March 1943, he was inducted into the U.S. Army. He was a member of the 740th Tank Battalion, Headquarters Company. He was Communication Chief and a marksman rifle man. He was mobilized in World War II in campaigns at the Ardennes, Rhineland and the Battle of the Bulge. He proudly served his country, earning him 1 service stripe, 3 overseas service bars, EAME Theatre Campaign Ribbon with 3 bronze stars, American Theatre Campaign Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Army of Occupation Ribbon Germany and a Victory Ribbon.
He married Malinda Williams on April 4, 1944 while on furlough from the Army during World War II. After being discharged from the Army in 1946, they moved to Kansas City, KS. He worked for Santa Fe Railroad as a Railroad Agent at Topeka, Emporia and Olathe, Kansas and Tulsa, Oklahoma from 1947 until 1982. After retirement they moved back to Stilwell. They were married for 42 and ½ years until her death in 1986.
He enjoyed travelling to Mexico with Malinda and their dogs, going fishing with Stan, watching baseball and football, going out to eat, talking to people and watching the English comedies on PBS. He attended the Lutheran Church in Tahlequah.
Raymond was preceded in death by his wife, Malinda, his parents, 3 sisters, Olline Pruitt, Pauline (Peachy) Chuculate and infant, Marjorie and 3 brothers, Leonard Hummingbird, Stanley Hummingbird and Emmet "Pete" Coombes.
He is survived by brothers, Ellis Hummingbird, of Wichita, KS and Nathaniel Hummingbird, of Oaks, OK and sister-in-law, Virginia Hummingbird, of Stilwell. Many nieces, nephews and friends also survive him.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at Hart Memorial Chapel with Bro. Leon Hitcher officiating. Interment will follow at 1:00 p.m. in the Fort Gibson National Cemetery under the direction of Hart Funeral Home of Stilwell.
