Sarah L. J. M. Bird Hirst, beloved daughter of Jess Bird and Sallie Scott Hogshooter, peacefully passed away on December 1st, 2023 in Stilwell, Oklahoma. Born on April 14, 1943 in Chewey, Oklahoma, Sarah led a rich and fulfilling life, touching the hearts of all who knew her.

Sarah's journey began with a pursuit of knowledge and selfless service to her country. After attending BIA Boarding Schools at Seneca and Sequoyah, she courageously enlisted in the United States Army where she served with utmost dedication as a Corpsman. Her unwavering commitment to her duties earned her the respect and admiration of her fellow servicemen and women.

Following her military service, Sarah continued her pursuit of education, attending Bacone, Northeastern State University, Tulsa University, and Oklahoma State University. A lifelong learner, she embraced knowledge and eagerly shared her wisdom with those around her.

Sarah's love for her community extended far beyond her military and academic achievements. She was an active member and past president of the Vietnam Veterans Chapter 877, where she tirelessly advocate for the rights and welfare of her fellow veterans. In her free time, she found solace in needleworking and crafts, using her skilled hands to transform the ordinary into extraordinary. Her walks through nature provided her with a sense of peace and served as a reminder of life's simple wonders. Furthermore, Sarah's love for literature led her to become an avid reader, opening doors to new worlds and sparking her imagination.

As Christmas was her favorite holiday, Sarah embodied the spirit of love, kindness, and joy. Her enthusiasm and warmth brought comfort to those around her, making every holiday season truly special.

Sarah was preceded in death by her parents, Jess Bird and Sallie Scott Hogshooter, as well as her brothers Jess Fishinghawk, Thomas Fishinghawk, Lester Bird, and Houston Bird. She was also predeceased by her sisters Helen Bird and Lillie Bird, as well as one infant brother and one infant sister.

Sarah's memory will forever be cherished by her beloved daughter Paula Bailey and son-in-law Danny, along with her cherished grandchildren Amanda Willard, Joshua Baird, and Kimberly Rentchler. She also leaves behind five great-grandchildren, her brother Robert Hogshooter, and her sisters Rebecca Patton and Susie Thompson and her spouse Roy. Numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends mourn her loss.

Visitation will be held on December 6th, 2023 from 12:00-2:00 pm at Hart Funeral Home Chapel, followed by a funeral service to honor Sarah's life at 2:00 pm.  Following the service, Sarah will be laid to rest at Tyler Springs Cemetery in Stilwell, OK.

In this time of loss, let us remember Sarah's enduring spirit and the legacy of love and dedication she leaves behind. May her soul rest in eternal peace.
